 Mother Earth

A small city of the motherland,
Rawalpindi.
A thoughtful moment

The planet with life,
Third planet of the solar system,
Earth.
Dear Motherland,
Last week, I was fortunate enough to read an analysis on deforestation, on WWF’s website. The heart was broken when I read the complete analysis. It said that 46-58 million square miles of forests are lost each year (which is equivalent to 36 football fields vanishing, every minute). You are suffering from the cancer of environmental pollution and your children are the ones, responsible for your bad health. How very unfortunate are we. We are well aware of the fact that our actions are the root cause of the damage to your health but still, we are reluctant to change our ways.
Presently, you are facing the problems of deforestation, climate change, pollution, flooding, ozone depletion, environmental degradation, nuclear issues and resource depletion. In 1945, US army bombarded your two precious cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear bombs. Even after 68 years have been passed, your dear Japan is still facing the after effects of that horrible incident.Mother Earth

Humans are leading their life towards technological advancements. With the use of these technological advancements, their lives have become  and quite comfortable and easy. But some of these advancements are fatal for you. The smoke emitted from the vehicles, the toxic material of factories, chemical wastes, atomic wastes, use of CFCs, excess use of depleting resources; these are some of the actions of humans that result into your bad health.
Animals and birds protect their children from the hard and fast life of today. They protect their children from every possible danger or threat. Similarly, you have protected humans from ultraviolet radiations coming from the Sun, by creating Ozone layer around yourself. You have always played your part well. In order to change seasons, you rotate around continuously, so we can have variation in the seasons. You have provided us with minerals, different fruits and vegetables. You have the natural beauty that never fails to nourish our souls and enrich our eyes.
Woefully, we are not taking care of you as you take care of us. Even our small actions affect your health. It’s time, we realize that it is our responsibility to protect you and to take a good care of you and your health.

One of your thoughtful inhabitants, Evo Morales said, “Sooner or later, we will have to recognize  that the earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans”

Today, I promise that my friends and I would take actions that are beneficial for you, your health and your beauty. We will minimize the use of smoke emitting vehicles, avoid the use of CFCs, plant trees, dispose of the garbage properly and encourage other people to do the same. We would also create awareness among the people around us that how these small acts are beneficial for our own selves and our motherland. After all, little drops of water form a mighty ocean. We realize your agony and suffering and we would try our level best to save you from this cancer of environmental pollution.

Your Sympathizer,
Nabiha Shakeel.
