Pehli Kiran School children- Making them Smile costs nothing but your time.
In the Fall of 2009 I did some volunteer work with a Youth Organization called Zimmedar Shehri (Responsible Citizen) .It was teaching underprivileged children in a slum area on the edges of the most Posh Locality of Islamabad. Education was dependent on the attitude of teachers,if they wanted they came otherwise they didn’t. These are the regular teachers I’m talking about. These kids learnt A for Apple , R for Red but they couldn’t spot the colour red on my RED and white Polka dotted dress. They knew the sky was blue , but couldn’t pick out anything blue amongst them. Even though their uniforms were Blue. They had no concept of association .In 2007 I’d taught Kindergarten at my former school. We had arts and crafts , colouring time , poetry time , P.E and these children had never done any of these. They’d never had the joy of cutting and pasting. Everyday the kids in the school I’d taught previously at went home with bunny ears , mickey mouse or something extra, either a mask or headpiece. They had mini portfolios made for them with all their artwork to be viewed on Parent Teacher Day.
I’m not saying that it’s wrong for those kids to enjoy those activities .I’m saying all children should know the joy of colouring.
They Concentrated on putting glue on the Apple Cut out.First attempt ever,or should I say it’s the first opportunity given at childhood.
